The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
