Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
