Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
